The European Union has implemented a new €3 ($3.40) customs handling fee on low-value e-commerce parcels coming into the region, a move that directly impacts imports from popular overseas platforms like Shein, Temu, and AliExpress. These platforms had previously enjoyed duty-free entry for their products. This new fee is applied per customs classification within a shipment, meaning that parcels containing multiple product categories will face several charges. Conversely, shipments with identical items will be subject to a single €3 fee.
This policy shift is part of the EU’s effort to tackle what it sees as unfair competition and to close loopholes in customs exemptions that allowed foreign online retailers to sell their goods at significantly lower prices.
