In a move to bolster economic ties, India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently engaged in separate discussions with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Riikka Purra, as well as Minister of Economic Affairs Sakari Puisto. These talks centered on enhancing trade and investment collaborations between India and Finland, with particular emphasis on key sectors that promise mutual benefits.
The meetings were particularly focused on fostering collaboration in areas such as digitalisation, innovation, and research and development. Both nations see significant potential in strengthening ties in these sectors, along with nurturing startups and forming robust business partnerships. An important aspect of these discussions was the exploration of opportunities in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, and space, all while keeping sustainability in mind.
A central theme of the interactions was the anticipated India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). Both sides deliberated on how this agreement could serve as a catalyst for enhancing bilateral trade, drawing in investments, and opening up new avenues for businesses in both countries. This proposed FTA is viewed as a strategic step forward in solidifying economic relations and expanding market access.
The backdrop to these meetings is the ongoing negotiations between India and the European Union on a comprehensive trade agreement. This broader dialogue aims to reinforce economic partnerships and facilitate cooperation across various strategic sectors, aligning with the shared goals of the involved parties.
