In a recent phone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized the strategic significance of Türkiye’s relationship with the European Union amidst rising regional tensions. The discussion, which touched on Türkiye-EU relations as well as broader regional and global issues, was detailed by the Turkish Communications Directorate on NSosyal, a social media platform in Türkiye.

President Erdoğan highlighted Türkiye’s ongoing efforts to sustain a cease-fire and promote peace in the region, particularly urging the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz at the earliest opportunity. He expressed concern over Israel’s actions, accusing the nation of perpetuating regional conflicts and engaging in activities that breach international law, including those he described as piracy. Erdoğan stressed the necessity of increasing international pressure on Israel to address these issues.

Further, Erdoğan advocated for Türkiye’s inclusion in European security strategy initiatives, suggesting that such integration would be mutually beneficial. He also pointed out the need to update the Turkish-EU Customs Union, arguing that such a move would enhance economic ties and foster shared interests between Türkiye and the European Union.

The call between the two leaders underscores the complex dynamics of Türkiye-EU relations, which are influenced by a variety of geopolitical and economic factors. Erdoğan’s comments reflect Türkiye’s strategic priorities in the face of ongoing regional conflicts and its desire to play a more integrated role in European security and economic frameworks.
