The European Union is stepping up its engagement in the ongoing Cyprus conflict by appointing new envoys and expressing renewed support for the United Nations-led peace negotiations. This initiative comes in anticipation of an upcoming visit from UN Secretary-General António Guterres. The EU’s heightened involvement aims to contribute to resolving the long-standing division on the island.
However, this move has been met with skepticism from Turkish Cypriot authorities, who have raised concerns about the EU’s ability to act as a neutral mediator. Their skepticism stems from the fact that the Republic of Cyprus is an EU member state, which they argue compromises the bloc’s impartiality. Additionally, the Turkish Cypriot side has expressed dissatisfaction with the EU’s decision to appoint a new envoy for Cyprus without engaging in consultations with them.
In response, the European Commission has outlined that its special representative’s role will be to foster trust between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The representative is also tasked with supporting the resumption of negotiations within the framework established by the United Nations. EU officials have reiterated their dedication to assisting efforts aimed at achieving a durable resolution to the Cyprus issue.
The Cyprus conflict has persisted without resolution for decades, with peace talks reaching an impasse in 2017. Turkish Cypriot leaders have been firm in their stance that any future discussions must acknowledge their sovereign equality and grant them equal international standing before formal negotiations can recommence. This condition remains a critical point of contention in the quest for a comprehensive settlement.
