Türkiye and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are commemorating the 52nd anniversary of the Cyprus Peace Operation of 1974, amid ongoing political strains with the Greek Cypriot administration. The official ceremonies are taking place in Lefkoşa, also known as Nicosia, with a prominent Turkish delegation in attendance, led by Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz. This year’s anniversary is marked by Türkiye’s strategic move to deploy naval vessels for public viewing and plans to open a maritime traffic monitoring center in Famagusta, aimed at bolstering cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
The commemoration occurs against the backdrop of stalled negotiations regarding the future of Cyprus. Turkish Cypriot authorities continue to push for a resolution centered on a two-state solution, emphasizing sovereign equality. They express dissatisfaction with the ongoing lack of international acknowledgment of the TRNC and accuse the Greek Cypriot leadership of heightening regional tensions through the formation of new military alliances.
For the Turkish Cypriot officials, Türkiye’s position as a guarantor state is deemed crucial for maintaining security on the island.
