In a bid to bolster international collaboration in disaster health management, Türkiye has pledged to share its expertise with nations around the globe. This commitment was articulated by Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu during the World Health Organization’s Ministerial Conference held in Istanbul, which focused on enhancing health security through efficient earthquake emergency management. At the conference, which attracted delegates from approximately 40 countries, Memişoğlu underscored the necessity for scientific cooperation and global solidarity to effectively tackle the universal challenge posed by earthquakes.
Drawing from Türkiye’s extensive experience in managing disaster response, Memişoğlu highlighted the country’s substantial efforts following the catastrophic earthquakes in February 2023. The disaster saw more than 138,000 healthcare workers, emergency responders, and support staff mobilized to address the crisis. Additionally, Türkiye executed one of its largest scale medical evacuations, relocating over 51,000 patients to hospitals beyond the affected areas and swiftly establishing temporary medical infrastructure, including field hospitals.
Türkiye’s strides in fortifying its healthcare system were also spotlighted by Memişoğlu, with the country investing heavily in robust hospital facilities, emergency medical services, and digital health technologies. The introduction of advanced air ambulance operations and the National Medical Rescue Teams (UMKE) have further strengthened its disaster response framework. A notable development is the GÖKBEY ambulance helicopter, a domestically produced asset designed for delivering intensive care during emergencies, especially in challenging terrains.
Looking towards future preparedness, the country is taking proactive steps to brace for potential disasters, such as a major earthquake anticipated in the Marmara region. Türkiye has rolled out a comprehensive earthquake preparedness strategy and boasts what it claims is the world’s inaugural Public Health Services in Earthquakes Guide, detailing response strategies for Istanbul and other vulnerable areas. These initiatives reflect Türkiye’s dedication to enhancing its readiness for future calamities.
Minister Memişoğlu reiterated Türkiye’s resolve to aid disaster-struck nations by offering its expertise, trained personnel, and emergency response capabilities. He emphasized that no single country can adequately tackle large-scale disasters without the support and cooperation of the international community, highlighting the importance of global unity in the face of such challenges.
